Donaldson Company (NYSE:DCI) is pleased to announce that the Donaldson
Foundation has awarded $10,000 to the Minnesota Zoo in support of the
Investigators Program. The award will be used to create evaluation
criteria and measure the long-term impact the program has had in the
communities it serves.
"With this generous gift from the Donaldson Foundation, Zoo
Investigators will launch a new Youth Advisory Committee this spring for
graduates of the program as well as complete additional evaluation work
to measure the long term impact Zoo Investigators has on building
ecological literacy and science identity in participants," said Grant
Spickelmier, Assistant Director of Education at the Minnesota Zoo. "Both
of these will greatly enhance the educational impact of the program."
Zoo Investigators is an out-of-school youth development program that
introduces 5th - 8th grade low income and minority youth to important
scientific concepts concerning animals and wildlife biology. The program
provides students with opportunities to explore real world environmental
issues and uses the natural appeal of animals to excite students about
the possibilities of science and science careers. The program consists
of a regular afterschool enrichment class paired with monthly
environmental field trips and an intensive week long summer camp at the
Zoo. Currently, Zoo Investigators programming is held at Andersen
Community School in the Phillips Neighborhood in Minneapolis and
Farnsworth 5-8 School in the Payne-Phalen Neighborhood in St. Paul.
"Zoo Investigators is a wonderful program that offers participants a fun
way to learn about how the environment affects animal and wildlife
biology," said Jessica Exley, Donaldson Foundation president. "We are
pleased to support this program and applaud the Zoo for implementing
evaluation mechanisms that will ensure the program's continued success."
