Donaldson Foundation Establishes Endowment for University of Minnesota Engineers

July 1, 2010
$25,000 for Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering

MINNEAPOLIS – July 12, 2010 – The Donaldson Foundation, a long time supporter of the University of Minnesota, announced today the establishment of an endowed scholarship for the Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (BBE) Department. The $25,000 endowment will be available for undergraduate students in perpetuity beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year.

The U of M Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering integrates engineering, science, technology and management for the sustainable use of renewable resources and enhancement of the environment. The undergraduate program is offered through the College of Science and Engineering, in affiliation with the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Dr. Shri Ramaswamy, Professor and Department Head, has seen an increasing interest in the BBE field of study. "Biofuels, bioenergy, bio-based materials and the bioeconomy, global climate and environmental change are areas of study that are seeing rises in undergraduate enrollment. Organizations, like Donaldson, through scholarships and endowments, help us recruit and retain high quality students in our program. Their support is greatly appreciated by our students and faculty."

The University's BBE undergraduate program includes specializations that prepare students for careers in biofuels and renewable energy, systems for green buildings, water and air quality, and safe and healthier foods.

"The University of Minnesota's BBE program aligns well with our Foundation's mission of supporting education," said Kristine Graham, president of the Donaldson Foundation. "Additionally, the course of study offered to BBE undergraduates includes engineering and filtration technologies that will promote on-going interest for graduates in companies such as Donaldson."

Established in 1966, the Donaldson Foundation funds charitable causes on behalf of Donaldson Company, Inc. Since 1991, the Foundation has contributed 2% of the company's U.S. earnings each year, making it a Minnesota Keystone participant. Its mission is to positively impact the communities in which its employees live and work by supporting education.
